Treatment for autism continues to advance every year. With recent increase in focus from the media, people are starting to understand the implications of this disorder. The support networks are growing for families that have children dealing with the disorder. It is important to give you and your child the best medical options available. One of these is Attention Deficit Disorder which is commonly referred to as ADD. As with most children diagnosed with ADD they have trouble remembering important things, have a tendency to lose things and are usually very unorganized. Our grandson, Ben, has ADD in addition to being an Asperger child and this has caused serious problems with his ability to focus on school work.
Another fixation that appeared was his interest in hair. He definitely did not like to get a haircut, but a neighbor who visited his home had a large, rather bushy hairdo and he loved her hair. He would point to her hair and say "haircut." On more than one occasion Ben would go to sleep by his mother while rubbing her hair. Shortly after the diagnosis Ben's dad was transferred to Randolph Air Force Base, TX. and we began the process of learning all we could about the disorder. Ben's mom heard about a conference that was going to be held in the Dallas area. Dr. Tony Attwood, the leading expert in the field of Asperger Syndrome at the time, was to be the main speaker. She attended the conference and came away with a wealth of helpful information.
When Ben started to preschool he had no idea the correct way to hold a crayon or a pencil. He would hold the very top of the pencil by the eraser end and try to write. Most children seem to know how to hold a crayon or pencil by observing a parent or sibling holding it the correct way. We now know why he did not know how to do such a seemingly simple thing. As a way to help other parents and family members deal with thetrajedy of having an Aspergers Syndrome child, my wife Suebegan writingarticles regarding her experience with Ben. She covers such subjects such as Asperger symptoms, early signs, school problems, medical treatment and counseling.
For many when the day of reckoning about the dreaded Autism word finally arrives when somebody impartial takes you aside and points out what has been blatantly obvious to you for a long time i.e. Do you think your child might have a learning difficulty, there are certain characteristics of Autism presenting themselves and perhaps your child needs a Psychological Assessment. I believe and I have experienced for myself, if you are in a committed relationship that is going through many challenges, because your child is autistic and you desire the relationship to improve, the next healthy, positive step would be to tackle the issues that are surfacing from underneath those uneasy feelings. It is imperative to pay attention to your feelings and allow them to be your source, to guide you to the next logical step when you fear a divorce.
